“Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.” –Katy Swartz
I admit, going into this book and this series I was skeptical. I do thoroughly enjoy a good bad boy story line! (because it’s one of my favorites, who doesn’t love a bad boy?) At first, what really instantly drew me into the story was our main lady, Katy. For starters, she is a bookworm just as obsessed with books and blogging as I am sure most of us are. I really appreciated being able to instantly relate with her.
Our story starts off with Katy moving to West Virginia soon after her father passes away from cancer. Katy is excited for a fresh start but at first held back by the memories she is leaving behind not wanting to lose the part of herself that had her father in her life well before the sickness took him. Katy decides to take the high road and embraces the change (something that continues to be a pattern with her that I greatly admire). Katy’s first encounter with her neighbors is a rather interesting one. She meets Dee Black and it’s already apparent she couldn’t possibly be from around here with her outrageous beauty that seems a bit… otherworldly. However, Dee is an absolute sweetheart, her only intention is to find a true friendship in a town they all now call home in the middle of no where.
Katy’s first encounter with Dee’s brother was not nearly as exciting or friendly. Daemon Black is cold, beyond arctic. It is very clear from the start he does not like Katy hanging around his sister or him. I think at first, I was a little put off by his attitude only because as much as I LOVE that bad boy attitude I was like “we’ve seen this, please don’t be the same thing as so many others please be different” and honestly, I am telling all of you it is so different. He isn’t on a power trip, and I truly believe he actually hates being fresh with Katy (although their banter alone is worth the read of this book, Katy doesn’t take ANY of his crap).
We essentially find out they are an Alien race called the Luxen that fell to earth after their planet was destroyed. The government is aware of their presence but there are still threats from their kind and from the species that threatens the Luxen, the Arum. (The Arum are the shadows and the Luxen are made of light, the Arum destroyed their planet following the Luxen to earth). There are some really great action scenes that play out through the book and Katy is bad-ass, enough said. She finds out about Aliens and helps protect them without question. She has empathy for what happened to them and their kind. She understands the importance of keeping their secret from her mother who she is very close with. You will absolutely love that the author incorporates that.
Through the entire book #1 there is a slow burn between Daemon and Katy and it is AMAZING. I love their character develop as individuals and not only that, you see reason behind Daemon’s attitude. You hate him for it and you really you love him for it just the same. I also love that Katy feels that same way, but she never allows him to get away with stomping on her feelings. She may completely understand what drove him to try to drive her away, but that doesn’t excuse his words and behavior and she consistently makes that very clear. You go girl!
In conclusion, I really don’t wish to give a lot away in my reviews but to simply give a brief overview without really spoiling the major parts and most especially, the ending. I rated this one 4 stars because this book literally made me go out and buy the entire series that same day (not even kidding, I am just as crazy about books and reading as our leading lady is) but it wouldn’t exactly be fair for me to give this 5 stars. Just starting out, it took me a bit to be convinced it wouldn’t be a lot of what we have seen in the past. That is why I gave it 4 and not 5 for the first round.
I LOVED this book, it is a page turner if there ever was one. There is not a single boring moment in the book, every chapter leaves you wanting more. I live for the paranormal, aliens, and government conspiracy. If you do, you will fall in love with the series as I have right from the very first book.
Please do not go into this thinking it’s a YA fifty shades feel or that Daemon is emotionally abusive because that is FAR from the case. Katy can handle her own, and you will find that Deamon was cold to protect those he loves, but it never goes too far to the point where he could be deemed a terrible guy. A dick at first? Absolutely. Both Katy and Daemon have had tough things happen to them but I find that makes them both stronger. They don’t let that define them or ruin them.
“I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.” –Daemon Black
